🖤 1958–60 · The forging losses: John's mother is killed by a car; Paul lost his at fourteen. Two motherless teens write eye to eye: everything credited Lennon–McCartney, forever.
🇩🇪 Aug 1960 · Hamburg, renamed The Beatles: Reeperbahn clubs, up to eight hours a night for months — 800+ stage hours in two years. 'I was born in Liverpool, but I grew up in Hamburg.'
🍺 1961 · A lunchtime residency in a sweaty cellar: the Cavern Club, played nearly 300 times. A record-store manager comes to see the fuss — Brian Epstein. In weeks: manager, suits, the bow.
❌ Jan 1, 1962 · Decca audition, rejected: 'guitar groups are on the way out, Mr. Epstein.' The most expensive sentence in music-business history.

🇬🇧 1963 · BEATLEMANIA: 'She Loves You' becomes the decade's biggest UK single; at the Royal Variety John invites the boxes to 'rattle your jewellery.' Screaming now outguns the amplifiers.
🇺🇸 Feb 9, 1964 · Ed Sullivan: 73 million Americans — a third of the country — watch at once. Weeks later they hold ALL top five Billboard spots, a feat never repeated.
🎬 1964 · 'A Hard Day's Night': the film that invented how bands look on screen, an all-original album, and THAT opening chord. Working-class wit as a global export.
🏟️ Aug 1965 · Shea Stadium: 55,600 fans, the first stadium rock concert. Nobody — including the band — can hear the band. The problem that ends touring is now audible. Or isn't.
🎖️ 1965 · MBEs from the Queen. Meanwhile 'Yesterday' — a melody Paul dreamt whole and first called 'Scrambled Eggs' — becomes the most covered song in history.
🌿 Dec 1965 · 'Rubber Soul': Dylan has rewired them; the sitar enters. Pop songs are suddenly ABOUT something. Brian Wilson hears it and starts 'Pet Sounds' in awed reply.
⚡ 1966 · The terrible year: 'bigger than Jesus' brings record burnings and death threats; Manila brings a mob. August 29, San Francisco: the last real concert.
🔬 1966 · 'Revolver,' made by a band now living IN the studio: tape loops, backwards guitars, 'Eleanor Rigby,' and 'Tomorrow Never Knows' — arguably psychedelia's birth certificate.
🌈 Jun 1, 1967 · 'Sgt. Pepper': 129 studio days when singles took hours. The album as art object — costumes, printed lyrics, that final chord held forty seconds. The summer of love gets its soundtrack.
🖤 Aug 27, 1967 · Brian Epstein dies at 32. 'I knew we were in trouble then,' John said. The adult in the room is gone; the band starts managing itself — that is, stops being managed.
🧘 Feb 1968 · Rishikesh: the Maharishi trip sours, but it uncorks some forty songs — the White Album, sprawling and brilliant, recorded increasingly as four solo artists sharing a studio.
🍏 1968 · Apple Corps launches, a utopia hemorrhaging cash gorgeously. 'Hey Jude' — seven minutes of consolation for John's son — becomes their biggest single. The na-na-nas outlast the utopia.
🏢 Jan 30, 1969 · The rooftop: freezing wind over Savile Row, police on the stairs, and the last 42 minutes The Beatles ever play in public. 'I hope we've passed the audition.'
🛣️ Aug 1969 · One last act of discipline: 'Abbey Road' — the medley, George's arrival with 'Something,' a closer titled 'The End.' The zebra crossing becomes a shrine.
💔 1969–70 · John privately wants 'a divorce'; Paul, isolated, announces his own exit in April 1970. Headlines: PAUL QUITS THE BEATLES. 'Let It Be' limps out as the coda.
⚖️ Dec 1970 · Paul sues to dissolve the partnership — the only legal exit. Eight recording years, 13 albums, ~200 songs, and popular music permanently reorganized around bands who write their own.
