Adopting Biscuit: a rescue dog's first year

🐕 Aug 16, 2025 · Went to the shelter 'just to look' (a famous lie). Kennel 14: a wonky-eared terrier mix pressed against the back wall, too scared to bark. The card: 'Biscuit, ~3. Needs patience.'
🏠 Aug 23, 2025 · Homecoming. Biscuit rode the whole way folded into the footwell, walked in, found the gap behind the sofa, and moved in there instead.
🌙 Week 1 · The 3-3-3 rule is real: three days of hiding. We ate dinner on the kitchen floor nearby, not looking at him. Night four: a nose appeared over my shoulder and sniffed my ear.
🍗 Sep 2025 · Breakthrough currency discovered: roast chicken. For chicken, Biscuit will consider the radical proposals of 'coming closer' and 'being touched on one shoulder.'
😱 Sep 2025 · Learned his ghosts: raised voices, brooms, men in caps. We adjusted the house. You don't train the fear out first — you prove the house safe first.
🛋️ Oct 2, 2025 · THE SOFA EVENT. After six weeks of floor life, he stepped up, turned three circles, and sighed like a released hostage. We didn't move for two hours.
🚶 Oct 2025 · Walks upgraded from 'terrified patrol' to 'sniffing expedition.' Current record: eleven minutes at one lamppost. We call it reading the newspaper.
🎃 Nov 2025 · First trembling-free vet visit (chicken diplomacy). Healthy, 2.1 kg heavier than intake. The vet: 'this is a different dog.'
🐾 Nov 2025 · He learned his name — or decided the sound predicts good things and is worth turning for. His terms. Everything with him is his terms, and fair enough.
🎄 Dec 25, 2025 · First Christmas: unwrapped his own present (a honking carrot) with surgical precision, then guarded it from absolutely no one all day.
❄️ Jan 2026 · Snow. The park's most dignified dog lost his mind — figure-eight zoomies, snout-plowing, a white beard. Neighbors applauded. He pretended not to notice.
😤 Feb 2026 · Regression week: distant fireworks, and the sofa dog went back behind it for two days. Recovery took 48 hours, not four weeks. Progress is a spiral, mostly up.
🐶 Mar 2026 · First dog friend: an ancient labrador named Gus who moves at Biscuit's exact anxiety-free speed. They sniff the same lamppost in silence. Male friendship, distilled.
🌷 Apr 2026 · The recall landed: in the fenced field he came back at a dead sprint, ears inside out, just because near us beat anywhere else. No chicken involved. I teared up in public.
🏖️ May 2026 · First beach. Verdict: sand suspicious, waves personal enemies, dead crab the best thing in canine history. Slept fourteen hours after.
🛏️ Jun 2026 · Status: sleeps upside down in the bedroom doorway, owns four beds, uses ours. Barks at the doorbell now — a NORMAL dog thing he was too broken for last August.
📸 Jul 2026 · The comparison: shelter intake photo vs. yesterday's upside-down-on-the-lawn photo. Same wonky ears. Entirely different eyes.
🎂 Aug 2026 · One year, coming up. The card said 'needs patience.' Accurate but incomplete: he needed patience; we needed exactly this dog. Kennel 14 was the best door we ever walked through.
💛 What he taught us · Trust comes back in installments, on the payer's schedule. Show up daily and don't count. One morning the debt is simply gone.
