Marie Curie: a life in first places

🕯️ 1867 · Maria Skłodowska is born in Warsaw under Russian occupation, youngest of five in a family of teachers who had lost everything but their belief in education.
📚 1883 · Gold medal at fifteen — then the wall: Warsaw's university does not admit women. She studies anyway, in the clandestine 'Flying University' that moved nightly to dodge the police.
🤝 1886–90 · The sisters' pact: Maria works six years as a governess to fund Bronia's medical studies in Paris; Bronia will then fund hers. Both keep the bargain exactly.
🚂 1891 · At 24 she rides fourth-class to Paris with a folding chair and a blanket, enrolls at the Sorbonne, and signs herself 'Marie.'
🥇 1893 · Living on bread and tea in a garret chosen for its cheapness, she takes first place in the physics degree. Next year: second place in mathematics.
⚗️ 1894 · A colleague introduces her to a quiet magnetism researcher with lab space to share: Pierre Curie. He proposes within the year. She declines — Poland needs her.
💍 1895 · Pierre wins (he offers to move to Poland). They marry without rings; she wears a dark blue dress she can reuse in the lab. Their wedding gift to themselves: two bicycles.
