🧊 Dec 1914 · Into the Weddell Sea — the worst pack ice whalers can remember. Six weeks of dodging and ramming through a thousand miles of floes, one day short of the continent.
🥶 Jan 18, 1915 · The trap closes: overnight the pack freezes solid around the hull — 'like an almond in toffee.' The crossing is over before it began; the survival expedition has begun.
🏒 Feb–Sep 1915 · Ten months drifting WITH the ice, the wrong way. Shackleton's genius: routines kept sacred, dog-derbies raced, pessimists berthed in his own tent. Morale is rationed like food.
💥 Oct 27, 1915 · The ice closes its fist: beams snap like artillery, water floods in. Abandon ship. Hurley dives into the flooding hull for his photographic plates; they keep 120, smash the rest.
🌑 Nov 21, 1915 · From the ice they watch the stern rise and slide under. Shackleton's diary, complete: 'I cannot write about it.' To the men: 'Ship and stores have gone — so now we'll go home.'
🏕️ Dec 1915–Apr 1916 · Life on a drifting floe at 'Patience Camp': rations shrink to seal, penguin, then the dogs. Beneath them, the floe slowly splits over the deepest ocean rim on Earth.
🚣 Apr 9, 1916 · The floe shatters. Into three open boats — 28 men who haven't touched land in 16 months — six days among the ice, killer whales blowing alongside, bailing with frostbitten hands.
🏝️ Apr 15, 1916 · Elephant Island: a frozen rock nobody visits, but LAND. Men pour shingle through their fingers, laughing. It is also a dead end — no ship will ever pass.
⛵ Apr 24, 1916 · The James Caird sails: a 6.9-meter lifeboat, decked with sledge wood, ballasted with beach rocks — six men aiming for South Georgia, 1,300 km across the worst ocean on the planet.
🌊 May 5, 1916 · Shackleton mistakes a rogue wave's crest for clearing sky — the biggest sea of his 26 years afloat buries the boat. They bail for their lives. Worsley's four sextant shots hold true.
🏔️ May 10, 1916 · Landfall — on the WRONG, uninhabited coast, through a hurricane sinking a steamer the same night. Between them and rescue: an uncrossed interior of glaciers, with 15 m of rope.
⛰️ May 19–20, 1916 · Shackleton, Worsley, Crean cross the island in one 36-hour push — at one point TOBOGGANING blind into fog. All three later confess: a fourth seemed to walk with them.
🔔 May 20, 1916 · Stromness. Three ragged figures arrive from a direction no one ever has. 'Who are you?' — 'My name is Shackleton.' His first question: 'When was the war over?' It wasn't.
🚢 May–Aug 1916 · Three rescue attempts beaten back by ice. Shackleton, aging visibly, borrows a fourth ship — the little Chilean tug Yelcho — and gambles on a gap.
🎉 Aug 30, 1916 · Elephant Island, day 128 under two upturned boats: a ship. Shackleton at the rail, counting: 'They are all there! They are all well!' All 28 survived. Every single one.
⚰️ Jan 5, 1922 · Epilogue: heading south again, Shackleton dies at South Georgia, 47. At his widow's request he is buried there, among the whalers, facing south.
🔍 Mar 5, 2022 · A century on, Endurance is found 3,008 meters down — upright, preserved by the cold, her name and star still bright across the stern.
