Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to min'?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days o' lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
We twa hae run about the braes,
And pu'd the gowans fine,
But we've wander'd mony a weary foot
Sin auld lang syne.
We twa hae paidl't i' the burn,
From mornin sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin auld lang syne.

The Human Genome Project: Reading the Book of Life

1953|The double-helix structure of DNA is described in Nature. Biology gains an elegant shape for heredity, but reading the information inside it remains painstaking work.
1977|Frederick Sanger and colleagues publish a practical chain-termination method for reading DNA. The technique will later be automated and scaled far beyond a single laboratory.
1988|A U.S. National Academy of Sciences committee recommends a coordinated program to map and sequence the human genome. An audacious idea begins acquiring a plan.
April 1990|The NIH and U.S. Department of Energy publish the first five-year plan for an expected fifteen-year effort: map the genome, read its letters, and improve the tools.
October 1, 1990|The Human Genome Project officially begins. Its target is roughly three billion DNA letters — a biological text larger than any yet attempted.
1990|Ethics enters the blueprint. The project establishes research on the ethical, legal, and social implications of genomic knowledge instead of leaving those questions until later.
Early 1990s|Teams build genetic and physical maps before trying to read everything. The strategy is less like opening one book than locating millions of shuffled fragments first.
1993|Francis Collins becomes the project's U.S. leader. Updated goals place technology, mapping, model organisms, and large-scale sequencing on one coordinated road.
1996|At a meeting in Bermuda, project leaders agree that large-scale human sequence data should enter the public domain within twenty-four hours of generation.
The Bermuda principle|Release first, publish later. A rule created for one immense project helps change expectations for sharing data across genomic science.
1997|Volunteers are recruited to provide blood samples under informed consent. Donor identities are protected, and more samples are collected than will actually be used.
1998|With earlier mapping goals met and sequencing technology accelerating, a new plan moves the expected finish from 2005 to 2003.
March 1999|The pilot phase succeeds. The international consortium begins full-scale sequencing of the human genome across major centers in six countries.
December 1999|Chromosome 22 becomes the first human chromosome reported as a finished sequence: 33.5 million letters and a glimpse of the larger task becoming possible.
March 2000|The public project deposits its two-billionth DNA letter in GenBank. More than half of the draft's sequence has been produced in just the previous six months.
June 26, 2000|The public consortium announces a working draft covering about 90 percent of the genome. Celera Genomics announces an independently assembled draft alongside it.

The Summer We Saved Our Town Cinema

January 12|A white notice appeared behind the glass doors of the Lantern Cinema: closing after eighty-six years. Someone had underlined 'final screening' in blue pen.
January 20|Seven of us watched the last film beneath a leaking patch of ceiling. When the house lights rose, nobody stood up. Leaving felt too much like agreeing.
January 21|A group chat called Save the Lantern began with twelve people. By breakfast it had 184 members, three lawyers, two electricians, and no actual plan.
January 27|We asked the owner for ninety days before accepting a developer's offer. He gave us until May and a folder containing the numbers that had defeated him.
February 2|The first inspection replaced romance with a list: roof, wiring, heating, accessible toilets, damaged seats, and a projector old enough to have opinions.
February 9|Town hall meeting. Eighty-six people came carrying memories: first dates, rainy birthdays, Saturday matinees, one marriage proposal in row G.
February 16|We formed a community benefit group and elected the people who had read the paperwork. Saving a cinema began with minutes, signatures, and very bad coffee.
February 28|The fundraising target landed at £180,000. For a few seconds the room went completely quiet. Then the retired projectionist pledged the first £100.
March 8|Our launch night projected old ticket stubs and family photos onto the shuttered façade. Five hundred people filled the street; the building looked awake again.
March 17|Local shops offered rewards for donors: bread, bike repairs, haircuts, piano lessons. The campaign became a map of everything the town knew how to do.
March 29|The heritage grant application took three weeks and seventy-two attachments. We submitted it six minutes before the deadline and celebrated with vending-machine chocolate.
April 11|Bad news: the roof damage had spread farther than expected. The revised quote added £24,000, exactly when donations had begun to slow.
April 19|We announced the gap instead of hiding it. A former resident now living abroad offered to match every weekend donation up to £10,000.
April 27|An outdoor screening in the football field raised £7,600. Halfway through, rain arrived sideways. Nobody left; umbrellas simply became part of the picture.
May 3|The owner signed a long lease with the community group. We had not saved the cinema yet, but for the first time the keys were in hands that wanted the lights on.
May 18|Work began. Licensed crews handled the roof, wiring, and access upgrades; volunteers removed carpet, sorted salvageable seats, and discovered decades of popcorn everywhere.

From Kitchen Table to Saturday Market

February 3|Three boxes of overripe strawberries were marked down at the corner shop. I bought all of them with no plan beyond refusing to watch good fruit disappear.
February 4|Batch one became strawberry cement. Batch two never set. Batch three tasted like summer and made twelve small jars glow on the kitchen table.
February 8|I gave five jars to friends with a blunt request: tell me what you would change, not whether you love me. Four asked where they could buy another.
February 15|The first cost sheet was humbling. Fruit was only the beginning; jars, labels, sugar, kitchen time, card fees, and spoiled batches all wanted a line.
February 22|I checked the local food rules, completed the required training, and found a certified shared kitchen. The hobby acquired paperwork and became more real.
March 1|Name chosen: Small Weather Preserves. The idea was simple — every jar should taste like the brief season that made it possible.
March 7|I printed the first labels at home. They were slightly crooked and impossible to remove. Twenty-four jars entered the world wearing their mistake proudly.
March 12|Market application sent with three phone photos and a paragraph rewritten eleven times. I refreshed my inbox as if enthusiasm could accelerate municipal email.
March 26|Rejected. The spring market was full, and six other preserve stalls had applied. I allowed one evening of sulking, then asked to join the cancellation list.
April 5|A neighborhood café agreed to host a tasting. Seventeen people tried four flavors; lemon-strawberry won, rosemary-plum confused almost everyone.
April 12|I cut the launch menu from six flavors to three. Making fewer things well felt less exciting on paper and much calmer in the kitchen.
April 28|The market called: one vendor had withdrawn. I had five weeks, one folding table, no canopy, and exactly zero experience selling to strangers.
May 3|Borrowed a canopy, bought a card reader, practiced explaining the product in one sentence. My first version took four minutes and included the history of jam.
May 18|A full rehearsal in the living room revealed that the tablecloth was too short, the sign unreadable, and every jar looked better when raised six inches.
May 30, 11:40 p.m.|Thirty-six jars labeled, packed, and counted twice. The kitchen floor was sticky. I was too tired to feel nervous, which was almost useful.
June 1, 8:14 a.m.|First sale: one lemon-strawberry jar to a woman walking a dachshund. She paid without bargaining. I nearly gave her the table as a thank-you.

100 Days of Learning to Sleep Again

Day 0, 3:17 a.m.|I was awake again, bargaining with the clock. Tomorrow had already become something to survive before it had even begun.
Day 1|I stopped calling it a discipline problem. I booked an appointment, told one friend the truth, and made one rule: no heroic fixes bought after midnight.
Day 4|The appointment brought no dramatic answer, only better questions and a follow-up plan. Strangely, that felt more useful than another miracle supplement.
Day 5|I began a plain paper sleep diary: lights out, guessed sleep time, wake-ups, caffeine, mood. The goal was to notice, not to grade myself.
Day 7|First experiment: the same wake-up time every day. Saturday arrived, the alarm rang, and I discovered how much I had relied on weekends to repair the week.
Day 10|The phone moved from my pillow to the hallway. For three nights I hated the silence. On the fourth, silence started to feel like a room instead of a threat.
Day 14|I added a short morning walk before opening my laptop. Nothing cinematic happened, but the day gained a beginning instead of leaking out of the night.
Day 18|Coffee after lunch disappeared. I missed the ritual more than the caffeine, so I replaced the mug rather than the pause.
Day 23|A terrible night returned. I nearly declared the whole experiment a failure, then wrote one sentence in the diary: a setback is still data.
Day 27|I kept the wake-up time through a late Friday dinner. Saturday was foggy, but Saturday night came easily. The pattern finally made sense in my body.
Day 31|Blackout curtains, a quieter fan, the blinking charger covered with tape. The bedroom stopped being an office with a bed in it.
Day 36|My wind-down routine became deliberately boring: wash up, prepare tomorrow's clothes, read ten pages, turn off the lamp. Repetition did the persuading.
Day 42|A work message arrived at 10:48 p.m. I answered it the next morning. No project collapsed. One invisible emergency quietly left my life.
Day 49|Seven uninterrupted hours. I woke before the alarm and lay still, afraid to celebrate too loudly. The ordinary morning felt enormous.
Day 52|The good night did not make me a new person. I was simply less brittle: kinder in traffic, sharper in meetings, hungry at sensible times.
Day 58|A deadline pulled me back into two late nights and one old spiral. This time I returned to the routine without waiting for Monday or punishing myself first.

Shackleton's Endurance: every man home

📰 1914 · The Pole is won, so Shackleton proposes the last prize: crossing Antarctica on foot. Legend gives his ad as 'Men wanted for hazardous journey… safe return doubtful.' Thousands applied.
⚓ Aug 8, 1914 · Endurance sails as Europe goes to war — Shackleton offers ship and crew to the Admiralty; Churchill cables one word: 'Proceed.' Aboard: 27 men, 69 dogs, one stowaway, one cat.
🧊 Dec 1914 · Into the Weddell Sea — the worst pack ice whalers can remember. Six weeks of dodging and ramming through a thousand miles of floes, one day short of the continent.
🥶 Jan 18, 1915 · The trap closes: overnight the pack freezes solid around the hull — 'like an almond in toffee.' The crossing is over before it began; the survival expedition has begun.
🏒 Feb–Sep 1915 · Ten months drifting WITH the ice, the wrong way. Shackleton's genius: routines kept sacred, dog-derbies raced, pessimists berthed in his own tent. Morale is rationed like food.
💥 Oct 27, 1915 · The ice closes its fist: beams snap like artillery, water floods in. Abandon ship. Hurley dives into the flooding hull for his photographic plates; they keep 120, smash the rest.
🌑 Nov 21, 1915 · From the ice they watch the stern rise and slide under. Shackleton's diary, complete: 'I cannot write about it.' To the men: 'Ship and stores have gone — so now we'll go home.'
🏕️ Dec 1915–Apr 1916 · Life on a drifting floe at 'Patience Camp': rations shrink to seal, penguin, then the dogs. Beneath them, the floe slowly splits over the deepest ocean rim on Earth.
🚣 Apr 9, 1916 · The floe shatters. Into three open boats — 28 men who haven't touched land in 16 months — six days among the ice, killer whales blowing alongside, bailing with frostbitten hands.
🏝️ Apr 15, 1916 · Elephant Island: a frozen rock nobody visits, but LAND. Men pour shingle through their fingers, laughing. It is also a dead end — no ship will ever pass.
⛵ Apr 24, 1916 · The James Caird sails: a 6.9-meter lifeboat, decked with sledge wood, ballasted with beach rocks — six men aiming for South Georgia, 1,300 km across the worst ocean on the planet.
🌊 May 5, 1916 · Shackleton mistakes a rogue wave's crest for clearing sky — the biggest sea of his 26 years afloat buries the boat. They bail for their lives. Worsley's four sextant shots hold true.
🏔️ May 10, 1916 · Landfall — on the WRONG, uninhabited coast, through a hurricane sinking a steamer the same night. Between them and rescue: an uncrossed interior of glaciers, with 15 m of rope.
⛰️ May 19–20, 1916 · Shackleton, Worsley, Crean cross the island in one 36-hour push — at one point TOBOGGANING blind into fog. All three later confess: a fourth seemed to walk with them.
🔔 May 20, 1916 · Stromness. Three ragged figures arrive from a direction no one ever has. 'Who are you?' — 'My name is Shackleton.' His first question: 'When was the war over?' It wasn't.
🚢 May–Aug 1916 · Three rescue attempts beaten back by ice. Shackleton, aging visibly, borrows a fourth ship — the little Chilean tug Yelcho — and gambles on a gap.

Our daughter's first year

🌅 Jun 8, 2025, 4:47am · Nora arrived at dawn — 3.2 kg, furious about the eviction, with her mother's dark hair and (the midwife swears) my frown. The window went pink as she quieted.
🏠 Jun 11 · Home. Stood in the living room holding the car seat thinking: they just let us LEAVE with her? Where's the manual? The cat filed an objection from the bookshelf.
🌙 Week 2 · Time dissolved into three-hour loops: feed, burp, change, blink, repeat. At 3am I discovered she holds my finger in her sleep. Worth every loop.
😮 Week 5 · THE FIRST SMILE — a real one, aimed at her mother mid-song. We spent the rest of the day performing like desperate cabaret acts, chasing an encore.
📏 Jul 2025 · First check-up: 75th percentile for height, 99th for lung capacity (unofficial, neighbor-verified). The pediatrician said 'robust.' Into the baby book like a diploma.
🗣️ Aug 2025 · The cooing era. I say 'is that SO?' and she replies 'aaaghoo' with the gravity of a senate hearing. My most engaging meeting all year.
🤱 Aug 2025 · The 4am club has compensations: I know which birds start first and exactly how she sighs when she settles. Tired beyond language. Wouldn't trade the shift.
🎢 Sep 2025 · First roll! Executed once with total surprise on her face — then not repeated for eleven days, like a magician protecting a trick.
😂 Sep 2025 · Her laugh, discovered by accident: the sound of a zipper. A ZIPPER. We have unzipped every jacket in this house four hundred times. Best sound ever recorded.
🥣 Oct 2025 · First solids: mashed sweet potato. Facial journey: betrayal → confusion → acceptance → banging the tray for more. The wall took collateral damage.
🦷 Nov 2025 · Tooth #1, heralded by two weeks of drool and midnight opera. She now smiles like a tiny hockey player and bites spoons with audible pride.
🪑 Nov 2025 · Sitting up: the world reorganized from ceiling-view to room-view. She surveys her domain from the rug like a small chairman of the board.
🎄 Dec 25, 2025 · First Christmas: ignored every present, spent forty-five minutes in communion with a cardboard box. Can confirm all reports about babies and boxes.
👏 Jan 2026 · Skills shipping weekly: clapping (devastating at restaurants), waving (full-arm), and pointing — at lights, the cat, everything. The finger is the question mark she can't say yet.
🚼 Feb 2026 · CRAWLING — in reverse first, two weeks of confused backwards travel, then forward, then FAST. Nothing below 90 cm is safe. The cat claimed the second shelf.
🤒 Feb 2026 · First real fever: three nights walking the hallway in shifts, her hot cheek on a shoulder, the fear nobody warns you about. It passed. We aged a year each.

The Beatles: 1957–1970

⛪ Jul 6, 1957 · A church fête in Woolton: sixteen-year-old John Lennon's skiffle group plays on a truck bed. In the crowd, Paul McCartney, 15, who can tune a guitar and knows ALL the words. Hired.
🎸 1958 · Paul vouches for a schoolmate with fast hands: George Harrison, 14, auditions with 'Raunchy' on the top deck of a bus. John relents. Three of four, still the Quarrymen.
🖤 1958–60 · The forging losses: John's mother is killed by a car; Paul lost his at fourteen. Two motherless teens write eye to eye: everything credited Lennon–McCartney, forever.
🇩🇪 Aug 1960 · Hamburg, renamed The Beatles: Reeperbahn clubs, up to eight hours a night for months — 800+ stage hours in two years. 'I was born in Liverpool, but I grew up in Hamburg.'
🍺 1961 · A lunchtime residency in a sweaty cellar: the Cavern Club, played nearly 300 times. A record-store manager comes to see the fuss — Brian Epstein. In weeks: manager, suits, the bow.
❌ Jan 1, 1962 · Decca audition, rejected: 'guitar groups are on the way out, Mr. Epstein.' The most expensive sentence in music-business history.
🎛️ Jun 1962 · Last chance: Parlophone's George Martin — unimpressed by the songs, charmed by the wit — signs them, then rules on the drummer. By August, Ringo Starr completes the four.
💿 Oct 1962 · 'Love Me Do' scrapes to #17; 'Please Please Me' hits #1 months later. The debut album is cut in a single 10-hour day. British pop changes owners.
🇬🇧 1963 · BEATLEMANIA: 'She Loves You' becomes the decade's biggest UK single; at the Royal Variety John invites the boxes to 'rattle your jewellery.' Screaming now outguns the amplifiers.
🇺🇸 Feb 9, 1964 · Ed Sullivan: 73 million Americans — a third of the country — watch at once. Weeks later they hold ALL top five Billboard spots, a feat never repeated.
🎬 1964 · 'A Hard Day's Night': the film that invented how bands look on screen, an all-original album, and THAT opening chord. Working-class wit as a global export.
🏟️ Aug 1965 · Shea Stadium: 55,600 fans, the first stadium rock concert. Nobody — including the band — can hear the band. The problem that ends touring is now audible. Or isn't.
🎖️ 1965 · MBEs from the Queen. Meanwhile 'Yesterday' — a melody Paul dreamt whole and first called 'Scrambled Eggs' — becomes the most covered song in history.
🌿 Dec 1965 · 'Rubber Soul': Dylan has rewired them; the sitar enters. Pop songs are suddenly ABOUT something. Brian Wilson hears it and starts 'Pet Sounds' in awed reply.
⚡ 1966 · The terrible year: 'bigger than Jesus' brings record burnings and death threats; Manila brings a mob. August 29, San Francisco: the last real concert.
🔬 1966 · 'Revolver,' made by a band now living IN the studio: tape loops, backwards guitars, 'Eleanor Rigby,' and 'Tomorrow Never Knows' — arguably psychedelia's birth certificate.

Walking the Camino: 790 km to Santiago

🥾 Jan 2026 · Decided in January gray: this spring I walk the Camino Francés — 790 km, St-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago. Asked for five weeks off. Said it out loud so I couldn't unsay it.
🎒 Feb–Mar 2026 · The Great Pack Weigh-In. Rule: under 8 kg or it stays home. Casualties: the second book, the third shirt, every 'just in case.' First lesson: you need less than you think.
🛫 Apr 20, 2026 · St-Jean-Pied-de-Port. Collected the pilgrim credential and scallop shell #1. Slept badly. Tomorrow: the Pyrenees.
⛰️ Day 1 · The Napoleon Route: 1,200 meters up and over into Spain, through cloud, past vultures riding the ridge wind. Arrived at Roncesvalles a broken machine. 25 km down, 765 to go.
🦶 Day 3 · The first blister, as prophesied. An Italian grandmother fixed it with needle, thread, and terrifying competence. Her advice: 'the Camino gives what you need, rarely what you want.'
🍷 Day 6 · Past the Alto del Perdón wind turbines to Puente la Reina. Evening: pilgrim menu, three courses and wine for €14, shared with a Korean teacher, a Brazilian cyclist, a silent Dane.
🌾 Day 9 · Rioja: vineyards to every horizon, and the Irache fountain that dispenses FREE WINE to pilgrims. Took the traditional sip at 9am. When in medieval tradition…
🚶 Day 12 · The rhythm installed itself: walk at dawn, coffee at 10, arrive by 2, wash socks, nap, sleep by 9:30. Haven't known the day of the week for a week. Best feature so far.
😶 Day 15 · The Meseta — the flat plateau people warn about and some skip. Eight hours of wheat, sky, and my own steps. The guidebook says monotonous. Wrong: it's where the noise runs out.
🧠 Day 17 · On a dead-straight Roman road, the unexplainable thing happened: the problem I'd hauled from home quietly resolved itself. Walking is thinking. The Meseta is its cathedral.
🏥 Day 19 · Shin scare near Sahagún — the pain that ends Caminos. Pharmacy, ice, a rest day in León with tapas and the leg up. Rule two: the schedule serves you, not the reverse.
⛪ Day 20 · Rest-day bonus: León cathedral's stained glass at golden hour. Sat an hour with my boots off. Some detours are the point.
🌄 Day 23 · Into the mountains of León. At Cruz de Ferro, pilgrims leave a stone carried from home. Left mine — 500 km for exactly this. Lighter going down, in both senses.
🍇 Day 25 · O Cebreiro in fog: into Galicia through round Celtic houses. Suddenly green, wet, woodsmoke and eucalyptus. The shell markers now count DOWN: 150 km.
👣 Day 28 · The crowds arrive at Sarria (the 100 km certificate minimum) — a river of clean new shoes. Grumbled an hour, then remembered: everyone's Camino counts. The trail teaches; I'm slow.
🌧️ Day 31 · Galician rain, the horizontal kind. 28 km fully waterproofed, fully soaked anyway, laughing with the Dane — who finally talks. He was walking off a divorce; the Meseta fixed him too.

Adopting Biscuit: a rescue dog's first year

🐕 Aug 16, 2025 · Went to the shelter 'just to look' (a famous lie). Kennel 14: a wonky-eared terrier mix pressed against the back wall, too scared to bark. The card: 'Biscuit, ~3. Needs patience.'
🏠 Aug 23, 2025 · Homecoming. Biscuit rode the whole way folded into the footwell, walked in, found the gap behind the sofa, and moved in there instead.
🌙 Week 1 · The 3-3-3 rule is real: three days of hiding. We ate dinner on the kitchen floor nearby, not looking at him. Night four: a nose appeared over my shoulder and sniffed my ear.
🍗 Sep 2025 · Breakthrough currency discovered: roast chicken. For chicken, Biscuit will consider the radical proposals of 'coming closer' and 'being touched on one shoulder.'
😱 Sep 2025 · Learned his ghosts: raised voices, brooms, men in caps. We adjusted the house. You don't train the fear out first — you prove the house safe first.
🛋️ Oct 2, 2025 · THE SOFA EVENT. After six weeks of floor life, he stepped up, turned three circles, and sighed like a released hostage. We didn't move for two hours.
🚶 Oct 2025 · Walks upgraded from 'terrified patrol' to 'sniffing expedition.' Current record: eleven minutes at one lamppost. We call it reading the newspaper.
🎃 Nov 2025 · First trembling-free vet visit (chicken diplomacy). Healthy, 2.1 kg heavier than intake. The vet: 'this is a different dog.'
🐾 Nov 2025 · He learned his name — or decided the sound predicts good things and is worth turning for. His terms. Everything with him is his terms, and fair enough.
🎄 Dec 25, 2025 · First Christmas: unwrapped his own present (a honking carrot) with surgical precision, then guarded it from absolutely no one all day.
❄️ Jan 2026 · Snow. The park's most dignified dog lost his mind — figure-eight zoomies, snout-plowing, a white beard. Neighbors applauded. He pretended not to notice.
😤 Feb 2026 · Regression week: distant fireworks, and the sofa dog went back behind it for two days. Recovery took 48 hours, not four weeks. Progress is a spiral, mostly up.
🐶 Mar 2026 · First dog friend: an ancient labrador named Gus who moves at Biscuit's exact anxiety-free speed. They sniff the same lamppost in silence. Male friendship, distilled.
🌷 Apr 2026 · The recall landed: in the fenced field he came back at a dead sprint, ears inside out, just because near us beat anywhere else. No chicken involved. I teared up in public.
🏖️ May 2026 · First beach. Verdict: sand suspicious, waves personal enemies, dead crab the best thing in canine history. Slept fourteen hours after.
🛏️ Jun 2026 · Status: sleeps upside down in the bedroom doorway, owns four beds, uses ours. Barks at the doorbell now — a NORMAL dog thing he was too broken for last August.

Getting my pilot's license at 35

🎂 May 2025 · Turned 35. My sister's birthday gift: a 30-minute 'discovery flight' voucher she expected me to use once and frame. Strategic error on her part.
✈️ May 24, 2025 · The discovery flight. The instructor let me hold the controls over the bay and said 'you have the airplane.' Three words, total rewiring of a life plan.
📋 Jun 2025 · Did the sensible math: ~60 hours of instruction, a written exam, a medical, and a number with more digits than I'd hoped. Opened a savings account named WINGS. Told nobody yet.
🩺 Jun 2025 · Aviation medical passed. The doctor asked why now. Best answer I had: 'because 40-year-old me will ask why not then.'
📚 Jul 2025 · Ground school begins. My evenings now belong to airspace classes, weather theory, and a plastic flight computer from the 1970s that pilots swear by. They're right, annoyingly.
🛫 Jul 12, 2025 · Lesson one in a Cessna 152 older than I am. Takeoff: exhilarating. Straight-and-level flight: apparently a lifelong pursuit. My altitude wandered like a toddler.
🔁 Aug 2025 · Circuits, circuits, circuits. Takeoff, climb, turn, descend, land, again. My landings described by my instructor, generously: 'arrivals.'
💥 Aug 2025 · The plateau: lesson nine, landings getting WORSE. Sat in the car after and questioned everything. Instructor's note in my logbook that day: 'normal. keep going.'
🌤️ Sep 6, 2025 · It clicked. Flare, hold, hold, squeak. A landing so smooth the instructor slow-clapped. Grinned for approximately 72 hours.
🦅 Sep 20, 2025 · FIRST SOLO. The instructor stepped out — 'three circuits, I'll be watching' — and shut the door. The empty right seat is the loudest silence there is. Shirt-tail cut per tradition.
📝 Oct 2025 · Written exam: 60 questions on everything from cloud types to right-of-way rules. Passed with 88%. The two wrong answers haunt me still (magnetic compass errors, my nemesis).
🧭 Nov 2025 · Navigation: flying to places on purpose. First cross-country — three towns, a paper chart, a stopwatch, and the discovery that highways from 3,500 feet are the best map ever made.
🌬️ Dec 2025 · Crosswind month. Learned to land sideways-ish in winds that cancel beach days. Also learned the most important pilot skill: saying 'not today' and driving home.
❄️ Jan 2026 · Weather cancellations: 5 of 8 lessons. Used the ground time for radio practice. I can now say 'niner' without feeling ridiculous. Mostly.
🗺️ Feb 14, 2026 · SOLO cross-country: 150 nautical miles, two strange airfields, one wrong radio call that ATC kindly untangled. Landed home at golden hour. Logbook entry underlined twice.
📈 Mar 2026 · Polish phase: steep turns, stalls, simulated engine failures. My instructor's calm 'and where would you land NOW?' is permanently installed in my brain.

Marie Curie: a life in first places

🕯️ 1867 · Maria Skłodowska is born in Warsaw under Russian occupation, youngest of five in a family of teachers who had lost everything but their belief in education.
📚 1883 · Gold medal at fifteen — then the wall: Warsaw's university does not admit women. She studies anyway, in the clandestine 'Flying University' that moved nightly to dodge the police.
🤝 1886–90 · The sisters' pact: Maria works six years as a governess to fund Bronia's medical studies in Paris; Bronia will then fund hers. Both keep the bargain exactly.
🚂 1891 · At 24 she rides fourth-class to Paris with a folding chair and a blanket, enrolls at the Sorbonne, and signs herself 'Marie.'
🥇 1893 · Living on bread and tea in a garret chosen for its cheapness, she takes first place in the physics degree. Next year: second place in mathematics.
⚗️ 1894 · A colleague introduces her to a quiet magnetism researcher with lab space to share: Pierre Curie. He proposes within the year. She declines — Poland needs her.
💍 1895 · Pierre wins (he offers to move to Poland). They marry without rings; she wears a dark blue dress she can reuse in the lab. Their wedding gift to themselves: two bicycles.
❓ 1896 · Becquerel notices uranium salts fog photographic plates through paper. Most physicists shrug. Marie, hunting a thesis topic, decides the shrug is the interesting part.
💡 1897–98 · Her crucial insight: the rays depend ONLY on the amount of uranium, not its chemistry — radiation comes from inside the atom itself. She names it: radioactivity.
🧪 Jul 1898 · Pitchblende ore is MORE radioactive than its uranium allows — something unknown hides inside. They announce a new element, named for her occupied homeland: polonium.
✨ Dec 1898 · Five months later, a second element: radium — so radioactive it glows. Now they must actually produce it to convince the chemists.
🏚️ 1899–1902 · In a leaking shed 'between a stable and a potato cellar,' she stirs tons of pitchblende with an iron rod her own height. From ~7 tons of ore: one tenth of a gram of radium.
🏆 1903 · Nobel Prize in Physics, shared with Pierre and Becquerel — the committee had omitted her until Pierre insisted. First woman to win a Nobel. They skip the ceremony: too busy, too ill.
💰 1903 · The defining refusal: no patent on radium extraction. 'Radium is an element. It belongs to the people.' Fortunes are made on it — by others.
🖤 Apr 1906 · Pierre, weakened and lost in thought, is killed by a horse-drawn wagon on rue Dauphine. Her diary entries that spring are among science's saddest documents.
🎓 May 1906 · The Sorbonne offers her Pierre's chair. Her first lecture begins at the exact sentence where his last ended. First woman to teach there in 650 years.

From cubicle to freelance: year one

📊 Feb 2025 · The spreadsheet that started it: 14 months of runway saved, three potential clients sounded out, one row labeled 'worst case' that didn't look fatal. Stared at it for a week.
💌 Mar 14, 2025 · Handed in my notice. My manager said 'finally' — apparently everyone knew before I did. Worked my last month training my replacement and quietly panicking.
🎉 Apr 11, 2025 · Last day. Walked out with a plant, a card, and no idea what Monday would feel like without a badge to swipe.
😶 Apr 14, 2025 · First Monday. Woke at 6:40 out of habit. Sat at my kitchen table in pajamas at 9am with no meetings, no Slack, no anyone. Freedom feels weirdly like falling.
📇 Apr 2025 · Week one: registered the business, opened a bank account, sent 31 'I've gone independent' emails. Replies: 6. Leads: 2. The network is smaller than it looked from inside a job.
💼 May 2, 2025 · FIRST CLIENT. A former coworker's startup, a six-week design contract. Underquoted it by roughly 40% out of pure gratitude. Lesson logged, invoice sent anyway.
🧾 May 2025 · Learned what a day rate has to cover: the work, the unpaid admin, the pipeline hunting, the empty weeks, insurance, and future-me's pension. Recalculated. Gulped. Raised it.
🕳️ Jun 2025 · The first gap: contract ended, calendar empty, inbox silent for eleven days. Discovered the freelance emotional cycle — invincible on Monday, unemployable by Thursday.
🤝 Jun 2025 · Broke the gap by doing the thing I'd been avoiding: asking directly. 'Do you know anyone who needs…' Three coffees later, two projects. Referrals aren't luck; they're asked for.
🏖️ Jul 2025 · Worked from my parents' garden for two weeks in summer. Nobody approved the leave. Nobody could. Cried a little about that, in a good way.
📉 Aug 2025 · Client #3 ghosted after delivery. Invoice 28 days overdue, then 45. Learned about late fees, statutory interest, and the magic of a politely CC'd 'accounts team.' Paid on day 52.
⚖️ Sep 2025 · New rules written in blood: 50% deposit up front, contracts before work, no 'quick calls' that are actually workshops. Professionalism is a boundary, not a vibe.
📈 Oct 2025 · Best month yet — two retainers running. Also the month I worked three weekends straight and understood that the cubicle wasn't the thing that made me overwork.
🧘 Nov 2025 · Instituted actual working hours: 9–5:30, door closed at the end. Revolutionary discovery: clients respect the boundaries you actually hold.
🎄 Dec 2025 · First self-employed December: invoiced early, closed the laptop for two full weeks. Total earnings for the year so far: 82% of my old salary. Total commute: zero.
🧮 Jan 2026 · Tax return season. Past-me's meticulous receipt folder made present-me weep with gratitude. The accountant said 'this is the tidiest first year I've seen.' Framed that sentence mentally.

My first year in the vegetable garden

🔑 Aug 2025 · After four years on the waiting list: plot 27B is mine. Ten by five meters of weeds, a collapsed shed, and one defiant rhubarb that survived the neglect.
🌿 Aug 2025 · Week one: cleared bindweed with roots like electrical cable. Met the neighbors — Ted (forty years of tomatoes) and Priya (chili evangelist). Their advice contradicts perfectly.
🍂 Sep 2025 · Double-dug the first two beds. My back filed a formal complaint. The soil underneath is beautiful though — dark, crumbly, full of worms. Ted nodded at it, which I'm told is high praise.
🧄 Oct 2025 · First things ever planted: garlic cloves and overwintering onions. Buried them, watered them, stood there feeling like I'd done agriculture.
📚 Nov 2025 · Winter homework: seed catalogs. Ordered with the restraint of a lottery winner — 23 packets for a plot that sensibly holds 10 crops. No regrets yet.
❄️ Dec 2025 · Plot asleep under frost. Built a compost bin from old pallets. There is a specific pride in making something square from things that were free.
🌱 Feb 2026 · Windowsill season begins: chilies and tomatoes sown in yogurt pots. My kitchen is now 40% seedling nursery and my partner has accepted this.
🥔 Mar 2026 · Chitting potatoes on the bookshelf (they sprout better in light — who knew). First direct sowing outside: broad beans, in a cold snap, on Ted's dare.
🌧️ Mar 2026 · Learned lesson #1 the wet way: seedlings CAN drown. Lost a tray of lettuce to overwatering enthusiasm. Grief was brief; reseeded same day.
🐌 Apr 2026 · The slugs discovered my transplanted lettuce the same night I planted it. Casualties: 14 of 20. Countermeasures deployed: beer traps, copper tape, nightly patrols with a headtorch.
🌱 Apr 2026 · The garlic from October is a foot tall and I did nothing. Autumn me quietly high-fived spring me. This is the magic trick of gardening: planting is a letter to your future self.
☀️ May 2026 · Everything in at once: tomatoes out, beans up canes, squash in the corner Ted warned me it would conquer. The plot finally looks like the catalogs.
🥬 May 2026 · FIRST HARVEST: radishes and a bowl of salad leaves. Ate the radishes standing at the plot, dirt brushed on jeans. Best radishes in recorded history, obviously.
💧 Jun 2026 · Heatwave week: evening watering became a two-hour meditation. Discovered I no longer check my phone at the plot. Didn't plan that. Best harvest so far.
🐛 Jun 2026 · Found caterpillars skeletonizing the kale. Picked them off by hand into a bucket while having a long think about my place in the food chain.
🍓 Jun 2026 · The strawberries Priya gave me as runners produced exactly nine berries. Shared them at the plot bench: three mine, three Ted's, three hers. A complete economy.

Writing my first novel

💡 Jan 2025 · The idea arrived in the shower, as they do: a lighthouse keeper who receives letters addressed to someone who died forty years ago. Wrote it on a fogged mirror so I wouldn't lose it.
📓 Jan 2025 · Bought a notebook 'just for the novel.' Immediately intimidated by its blankness. Wrote the mirror sentence on page one so it wouldn't be blank anymore.
🗂️ Feb 2025 · Outlining phase. Discovered there are seventeen schools of outlining and their believers are at war. Picked the simplest: beginning, middle, end, on one index card.
⌨️ Mar 1, 2025 · Chapter one, sentence one. Rewrote it eleven times before allowing myself sentence two. Note to self: this pace yields a finished book in 34 years.
🌙 Mar 2025 · Found my writing window: 5:50–7:00am, before work, before doubt wakes up. The world is quiet and the inner critic sleeps in.
📈 Apr 2025 · First real milestone: 10,000 words. Celebrated by reading them back. Mistake. They were terrible. Kept going anyway — apparently that's the whole secret.
🧱 May 2025 · The middle. Nobody warns you about the middle. My lighthouse keeper spent three weeks staring at the sea because I didn't know what happens next.
🚶 May 2025 · Solved the plot problem on a walk, not at the desk. Started scheduling walks as writing time. My step count and my word count are now correlated.
✂️ Jun 2025 · Killed my favorite scene — eight pages of beautiful fog descriptions that did nothing. 'Kill your darlings' hurts exactly as advertised.
🏝️ Jul 2025 · Vacation with the draft. Wrote on a balcony at sunrise while everyone slept. 42,000 words. The keeper finally opened the fortieth letter.
😰 Aug 2025 · The 50k wall: became convinced the entire premise was stupid and someone had surely written it better. Googled it in a panic. Nobody had. Back to work.
☕ Sep 2025 · Joined a Tuesday-night writing group at the library. Reading pages aloud to strangers: terrifying. Their laughter at the right moments: fuel for a month.
📝 Oct 2025 · Plot twist discovered WHILE typing it — the letters' author wasn't who I'd planned at all. Apparently the book knows things I don't. Rewrote the outline card.
❄️ Nov 2025 · NaNoWriMo energy carried the final act. 1,200 words a day, dishes undone, plants unwatered. The keeper rowed out in the storm.
🎉 Dec 14, 2025 · THE END. 84,312 words. Typed the two words, sat back, and cried a little. Then immediately thought of three things to fix.
🥂 Dec 2025 · Followed the sacred rule: put the draft in a drawer for six weeks. Hardest willpower exercise of the whole project.

Van Gogh: ten years, ten paintings

🌱 1853 · Born in Zundert, a pastor's son in the quiet Dutch countryside. Nothing in his first 27 years suggested painting — that is the strangest part of the story.
🖼️ 1869-76 · Art dealer at Goupil & Cie in The Hague, then London and Paris. He sold pictures for seven years before it occurred to him to make one.
⛪ 1878-79 · Missionary among the coal miners of the Borinage, Belgium. He gave away his clothes and slept on straw; the church committee dismissed him for 'excessive zeal.'
✏️ 1880 · At 27, in his darkest year, the decision: he would become an artist. Brother Theo began sending money — a lifeline that would last the rest of his life.
📐 1881-83 · Etten, then The Hague: drawing peasants, learning perspective from books, filling sketchbook after sketchbook. Ten years of art compressed the hard way.
🥔 1885 · Nuenen — PAINTING I: The Potato Eaters. Dark, earthy, deliberately ugly by academic standards. 'I wanted it to speak of manual labour,' he wrote. His first masterpiece; almost nobody agreed.
🏙️ 1886 · Moves in with Theo in Paris. Meets the Impressionists — and his palette detonates: out with the browns, in with color as feeling.
🎨 1887 · PAINTING II: Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat. Short strokes of orange against blue vibrate around his face — he practiced the new color theory on the cheapest model available: himself.
🌻 Feb 1888 · South to Arles, chasing the light of Provence. In fifteen months there he will produce roughly 200 paintings — a pace with no parallel in art history.
🏠 1888 · PAINTING III: The Yellow House. He rents four rooms and dreams of a 'Studio of the South,' a brotherhood of painters. He buys twelve chairs, full of hope.
🌻 Aug 1888 · PAINTING IV: Sunflowers. Painted to decorate Gauguin's room, yellow on yellow on yellow. 'The sunflower is mine,' he wrote — and 130 years agree.
☕ Sep 1888 · PAINTING V: Café Terrace at Night. His first starry sky — a night painted without using black at all. Cobalt, citron, gaslight orange.
🛏️ Oct 1888 · PAINTING VI: The Bedroom. Flat color, tilted floor, absolute calm — 'the painting should rest the head, or rather the imagination.' He repainted it twice from memory.
🍷 Oct 1888 · Gauguin arrives at last. Nine weeks of painting side by side, arguing about art by night. Two geniuses, one small yellow house — it could not hold.
🩸 Dec 23, 1888 · The breakdown: the razor, the severed ear, the hospital. Gauguin leaves for Paris. The Studio of the South dies at nine weeks old.
🏥 May 1889 · He commits himself voluntarily to the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy. They give him two cells: one to sleep in, one to paint in.

One year in the van

🚐 May 3, 2025 · Bought her: a 2012 Sprinter with 140k miles, one dent, and a name that arrived instantly — Wanda. The plan: one year on the road, working remote.
🔨 May 2025 · Demo weekend. Ripped out the old shelving, found a 2014 granola bar in the wall. The floor plan exists only in my head and on a napkin.
🪚 Jun 2025 · Built the bed frame over three weekends and four YouTube tutorials. Slept in it in the driveway. Neighbors officially concerned.
☀️ Jun 2025 · Solar install day: 400W on the roof, batteries under the bench. Flipped the switch, the lights came on, and I yelled alone in a parking lot.
🍳 Jul 2025 · Kitchenette done — two-burner stove, 12V fridge, a sink that drains into a jug. It's 80cm of counter and it's everything.
💼 Jul 2025 · Told my boss the plan. Fully remote approved, with one condition: 'never miss the Monday standup.' Deal.
📦 Aug 12, 2025 · Moved out of the apartment. Everything I own now fits in 6 square meters. Handed over the keys, took one photo, didn't look back.
🛣️ Aug 15, 2025 · DAY ONE. Drove north with no reservation anywhere. First night: a quiet forest road, dinner on the tailgate, zero regrets.
🌲 Sep 2025 · Pacific Northwest month. Working mornings from trailhead parking lots, hiking at lunch. Wifi from a hotspot, standup from a mossy forest. Nobody noticed.
🌧️ Sep 2025 · First hard rain revealed a roof leak, directly over the bed, at 2am. Emergency sealant in the dark. Vanlife lesson #1: water always wins the first round.
🍂 Oct 2025 · Utah. Red rocks, empty roads, the kind of silence you can hear. Worked with a canyon view that made screenshots look fake.
🔧 Oct 19, 2025 · Alternator died 40km outside Moab. Towed by a guy named Dale who shared his jerky and life philosophy. $480 and a great story.
🥶 Nov 2025 · First cold snap: woke up to 2°C inside. Bought a diesel heater the same day. It's the best money I've spent this decade.
🦃 Nov 2025 · Thanksgiving at a campground potluck with five strangers who felt like family by dessert. Vanlife people share everything except campsite coordinates.
🌵 Dec 2025 · Arizona for the winter, like a proper snowbird. Learned the desert gets COLD at night and unreasonably beautiful at 6:47am.
🎄 Dec 25, 2025 · Christmas alone by choice: cinnamon rolls on the camp stove, a call home, a walk among saguaros. Strangely one of the best Christmases ever.

My first marathon: 16 weeks from the couch

🏃 Nov 12, 2025 · Signed up for the March city marathon after two beers and a motivational documentary. Current ability: 5K, slowly.
😅 Nov 13, 2025 · Woke up, remembered what I did, checked the refund policy. Non-refundable. Okay then. We're doing this.
📋 Nov 2025 · Found a 16-week beginner plan: four runs a week, one long run that grows every Sunday. Printed it. Taped it to the fridge.
👟 Nov 22, 2025 · Got fitted for real running shoes at a specialty store. Learned my old shoes were half a size too small. Explains a lot.
❄️ Dec 1, 2025 · Week 1 of the plan. 5K three times, 8K Sunday long run. Everything hurts in a promising way.
🌧️ Dec 9, 2025 · First run in cold rain. Learned rule #1: there's no bad weather, only wrong layers. Bought a running jacket.
🎄 Dec 25, 2025 · Christmas morning 10K before the family woke up. Quietest, prettiest run of the year so far.
📈 Dec 28, 2025 · Week 4: long run hit 12K — the farthest I've ever run in my life. Celebrated with an unreasonable amount of pasta.
🦵 Jan 6, 2026 · First scare: knee twinge at kilometer 8. Took three days off, panicked quietly, started doing the strength exercises I'd been skipping.
💪 Jan 2026 · Strength work twice a week now — squats, lunges, calf raises. The knee stopped complaining. Lesson painfully learned.
⛄ Jan 18, 2026 · Long run 16K in falling snow. A stranger runner nodded at me like we shared a secret. We do.
🍌 Jan 25, 2026 · Week 8: discovered mid-run fueling. A banana at 14K is a religious experience nobody warns you about.
🎧 Feb 1, 2026 · Ditched podcasts for the long runs. Turns out two hours alone with your own thoughts is the actual sport.
📏 Feb 8, 2026 · 21.1K — half marathon distance, done on a random Sunday, alone. Cried a little at the end. Blamed the wind.
😴 Feb 2026 · New discoveries: I now sleep 8 hours, drink less, and check weather forecasts like a farmer. Running rewires you.
🧂 Feb 15, 2026 · Learned about electrolytes the hard way after a cramping 24K. Salt tabs added to the Sunday ritual.

Ten months to "I do"

💍 Aug 9, 2025 · He proposed at the lake where we had our third date. I said yes before he finished the sentence.

📊 Aug 24, 2025 · The Spreadsheet is born. Budget: what we can actually afford, not what Pinterest thinks we can.
📅 Sep 2025 · Picked the date: June 6, 2026. Summer, outdoors, golden hour. Now everything has a deadline.
🏛️ Sep 2025 · Venue hunting, round one. Toured five places. One smelled like a gym. One cost more than a car.
🌳 Oct 4, 2025 · Found it: a small vineyard barn an hour from the city. Walked in, looked at each other, done. Deposit paid the same day.
👗 Oct 2025 · First dress appointment with mom and my sister. Cried in dress number three. Bought dress number seven.
📋 Nov 2025 · Guest list negotiations. Started at 180, survived three family diplomacy summits, landed on 95.
🍰 Nov 2025 · Cake tasting day — objectively the best day of wedding planning. Went with lemon and almond. Took a box home.
📸 Dec 2025 · Booked the photographer whose work made me cry on Instagram. She's shot at our venue before. Fate.
🎄 Dec 2025 · Engagement photos in the snow. Frozen fingers, one hot chocolate break, three frames that belong on a wall.
💌 Jan 2026 · Save-the-dates out. My grandmother texted back a single rose emoji. Perfect response.
🎶 Jan 2026 · Hired the band after watching one wedding video. If the dance floor is empty, nothing else matters.
🌸 Feb 2026 · Florist meeting. Learned the difference between garden roses and regular roses. My wallet learned too.
🤵 Feb 2026 · Suit fitting. He picked a deep green over classic navy and honestly? Best decision of the whole wedding.
😬 Mar 2026 · The caterer we loved doubled their quote. Two days of panic, then found a family-run place that's somehow better AND cheaper.

Learning piano at 30

🎹 Sep 2024 · Turned 30 last month. Bought a used digital piano off a neighbor who was moving. It came with a wobbly bench and a book of scales.
📖 Sep 2024 · First lesson with Mrs. Okafor. She asked what I wanted to play someday. I said Clair de Lune. She smiled and handed me a five-finger exercise.
🖐️ Oct 2024 · Two weeks of nothing but C position. My left hand behaves like it belongs to someone else.
🎵 Oct 2024 · First actual song: Ode to Joy, one hand at a time. Played it eleven times in a row out of pure disbelief.
😤 Nov 2024 · Hands together is a scam. Each hand knows its part perfectly until they meet.
🌙 Nov 2024 · Discovered practicing at 10pm with headphones is the best part of my day. Twenty quiet minutes, just me and the metronome.
🎄 Dec 2024 · Played Jingle Bells for my family. My niece said it was 'pretty good for a beginner.' She is six. I'll take it.
❄️ Jan 2025 · New year, new habit: 25 minutes every morning before work. Missed only four days this month.
📚 Feb 2025 · Started Alfred's Adult Book 2. Dotted rhythms arrived and humbled me immediately.
🎼 Mar 2025 · First piece I genuinely love: a simplified Gymnopédie No.1. Slow enough that I can think, beautiful enough that I don't want to stop.
😩 Apr 2025 · Hit the plateau everyone warned me about. Same mistakes, same bars, every day for three weeks.
💡 May 2025 · Breakthrough came from slowing down. Half tempo, hands separate, five perfect repetitions before speeding up. Boring works.
🎹 Jun 2025 · Mrs. Okafor assigned Für Elise — the real one, not simplified. The famous part is easy. Nobody warns you about the middle section.
🏖️ Jul 2025 · Vacation week with no piano. Caught myself practicing fingerings on the airplane tray table.
🎵 Aug 2025 · Für Elise, first section memorized. Played it at a friend's house party on a terrible keyboard. Applause. Possibly out of politeness. Still counts.
📈 Sep 2025 · One year of piano. Can now sight-read simple pieces slowly. My teenage self who quit guitar after three weeks would not believe this.

Stanford 2005 | Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

I’m honored to be with you today for your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. Truth be told, I never graduated from college. And this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation.
Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it. No big deal. Just three stories.
The first story is about connecting the dots. I dropped out of Reed College after the first six months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why’d I drop out?
It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.
Except that when I popped out, they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking, “We’ve got an unexpected baby boy. Do you want him?” They said, “Of course.”
My biological mother found out later that my mother had never graduated from college, and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later, when my parents promised that I would go to college. This was the start in my life.
And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford. And all of my working class parents’ savings were being spent on my college tuition.
After six months, I couldn’t see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was, spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.
So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
The minute I dropped out, I could stop taking the required classes that didn’t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked far more interesting.
It wasn’t all romantic. I didn’t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends’ rooms. I returned Coke bottles for the five-cent deposits to buy food with. And I would walk the seven miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it.
And much of what I stumbled into, by following my curiosity and intuition, turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example.
Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus, every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand-calligraphed. Because I had dropped out, and didn’t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and sans-serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle, in a way that science can’t capture. And I found it fascinating.
